The Okpekpe 10km Marathon race in Nigeria witnessed one of the rarest scenarios when a Kenyan athlete abandoned race to help a fainting colleague.
Simon Cheprot showed the highest degree of respect for the sport after he helped collegue Kinrono Kipkendi cross the finish line moving many to tears. This made him lose his place as the top contender in the race.
“Running is not war; running brings peace, unity & friendship.
“My dad told me one day, ‘When you’re walking and you meet a sick person on the road, help him; do not leave him’, so that was the first thing that came to my mind when I saw my friend on the ground,” Cheprot stated.
Although he lost the race, Nigerian Edo state governor, Adams Oshimole together with IAAF representative Mike Itemuagbor awarded the Kenyan Ksh 1 million for showing the highest degree of sportsmanship.
